I bought my first computer, anApple ][ "europlus", in early 1982. It had 48 KB of RAM, amonochrome green monitor, and one Disk ][ drive. It wasreally expensive, but I never regretted the purchase. On thecontrary: during the years I used the machine, from 1982 to 1986, itgave me enormous amounts of fun, and in the end it was worth everypenny I paid for it. During that period, I purchased numerous add-onperipheral cards, such as the 16K RAM card, a Z80 card, an 80-columncard, clock card, and a PAL TV card. The latter allowed me to finallysee, on my TV screen, the colors the Apple ][ produced.I thoroughly enjoyedwriting programs for the Apple ][, whilediscovering how everything worked inside the computer. In 1986 I bought my first Mac, and soon after theApple ][ was moved to the basement. Ten years later, around 1996, I discovered that a number of very good Apple ][emulators were available for the Mac, such as Stop The Madness (STM) and Catakig. One weekend, I got the Apple ][ from the basement, setit up on my desk, and to my surprise everything still worked withouta problem. I connected the Apple ][ to the Macwith a serial cable, and wrote software on both machines to convertmy collection of floppy disks to disk images on the Mac. Again to mysurprise, all disks could be read without a problem despite their tenyears in the basement. In the end, I managed to convert all mydisks, even the "copy protected" ones, like Bag of Tricks andVisicalc. The purpose of this was just to enjoy thenostalgia and relive the magical early days of the home computer era.
